Under the traditional approach to contract negotiation, businesses and their lawyers see the deal making process as competitive and adversarial. The lawyer works to “win” the deal for their client and represents their client “against” the other party.
However, as the “conscious business” movement is getting stronger around the world, its philosophies on general business issues are now also informing a trend in legal practice – “conscious contracts”, or values-based legal documents that are easy to understand and guide the parties’ relationship and expectations from the beginning.
Shirin will start with a quick, “plain English” lesson on contract law, and then facilitate a discussion on “conscious contracts” and what this movement could mean for your business. She’ll share some tools to help contracting parties (for example, new business partners) design their ideal relationship and set in place their own values-oriented structures and systems for addressing change, engaging conflict and managing crisis.
Attorney Shirin Chahal counsels businesses and nonprofits on all aspects of their business practices, including entity formation, joint ventures, employment and independent consultant contract negotiation, intellectual property registration and licenses, risk management, collections, conflict resolution, and litigation. She works hard to bring a nuanced, cost-effective and sophisticated approach to her clients’ legal matters. Shirin has lived in Nederland for 10 years and enjoys live music, skiing and snowboarding, reading, and travelling.
